BBQ to benefit center

There willl be a Gary Jones BBQ Fundraiser for the Cairo Senior Center on Aug. 27.

Plates cost $8 and may be picked up at the Center on 17th Avenue, NW, from 4 p.m-6 p.m.

Music will be featured in the sanctuary of Hilltop Bible Baptist Church, which is located across the street from the center, starting at 6:30 p.m.

The Hinkie Family from Texas will be performing.

Virtual School program

There will be an information session about the new Grady County Virtual Education Program on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the school's media center.  he meeting will be held to discuss options for parents who are home schooling their children or looking for other educational opportunities.

Electric bill program

The Roddenbery Memorial Library will be featuring a program called “Take Charge of your Electric Use" on Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Grady Room of the library. 

Jeanette Sickel and Cairo Energy Services Director Rod Prince will discuss ways to reduce your electric bill, what appliances in your home cost the most to operate and the best ways to reduce your electric bill by turning off devices or switching to more energy-efficient appliances.

Everyone is invited to bring their electric bill to the meeting and ask specific questions about reducing their bill.

Freedom Fund Banquet

The Grady County NAACP will be having its annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Grady Senior Center.

Tickets cost $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

If you would like to nominate someone for the Grady County NAACP Man or Woman of the Year, the deadline is Sept. 9.

After-school program

The after-school program at Eastside School in Cairo started Friday. The program provides after-school care, snacks and helps with homework from 3 p.m.-6 p.m. at the Eastside Elementary School campus through May 22, 2013 at a cost of $40 per week.

Courtesy transportation is available from the other Grady County schools.

Season tickets

Tickets are on sale at Cairo High School for the Syrupmakers’ 2013 football season.

Tickets for those who purchased tickets during the 2012 season and wish to keep their same seats may be purchased through Aug. 23. The cost for the five home games season tickets is $50 in the lower level and $75 in the upper level.  After Aug. 23, any unclaimed tickets will be made available for sale to the general public.

Tickets may be purchased at the CHS office.

 

Homecoming services

The 42nd annual homecoming services will be held at Tabernacle Baptist Church on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. The guest speaker will be Evangelist Kurt LaBouve.

TU fundraiser

Thomas University invites everyone to the Wild Wild West Saloon & Gambling Room, a scholarship fundraising event to be held at the Grady Cultural Center on Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m.

The night will feature live entertainment, food and drinks, and gaming tables with all proceeds benefiting scholarships for Grady County students.

50th class reunion

The Cairo High School Class of 1963 is currently making plans for its 50th reunion to be held later this year.

Work-based learning

If you are a business owner who might be interested in higher a student this coming school year, the Work-Based Learning program at Cairo High School has more than 35 juniors and seniors who are looking for work opportunities.  Each student accepted into the program must receive excellent teacher recommendations, meet high academic and behavior criteria and have an identifiable career goal.

Registration for sports

The Grady County Recreation Department will be holding registration for the 2013 Fall Sports season through August. You may register for Smurf Flag Football, Pee Week Tackle Football, Mite Tackle Football and MIdget Tackle Football and Cheerleading through Friday. Registration for soccer will be held through Aug. 26=. Registration will be held at the Rec Department office on the Pelham Highway, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
