— ‘The Hobbit’

The Syrup City Players will be presenting The Hobbit outside at Davis Park, October 4-5th and to help prepare the community for the performances, the group will be conducting two special classes at the Roddenbery Memorial Library.  On Tuesday night, September 10th, directors Jeff Lovett and Pat Orr will teach an "Intro to Acting" class in the library's auditorium beginning at 6:30p.m.  And on Tuesday, September 17th, the Syrup City Players will be presenting a class on Stage Makeup.  The programs are free to all ages.


Gold Tourney

Southwest Georgia Technical College of Grady County will be sponsoring their 6th Annual Golf Tournament to help raise money for scholarships for Grady County students on Thursday, October 17th. The four person scramble will begin with lunch at noon and a shotgun start at 1p.m. There will be prizes for the top four teams plus prizes for 'Closest to the Pin', 'Longest Drive', etc.  All proceeds from the tournament will benefit local students from Grady County who attend SWGTC.  For more information, call 227-2415.


Church program

The Cairo First Baptist Church invite everyone to come celebrate the new Covered Entrance at the church and help Jump Start the new Sunday School year with a covered dish luncheon after the morning worship service. The event will be held on Sunday, September 15th.  Everyone in the community is invited to attend.


The Archway Partnership Program in Grady County in cooperation with the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development at the University of Georgia are currently forming a group to participate in Leadership Grady, a customized local leadership program for people interested in developing community leadership skill and help create a positive and sustainable change in Grady County.  The program will begin in September 2013 and last through May 2014.  The deadline for application is Wednesday, September 4th and applications are available at the Roddenbery Memorial Library, The Cairo Messenger, The Chamber of Commerce and the Archway Partnership office in City Hall.



All area veterans are reminded that the American Legion Post #122 meets the 1st Tuesday of each month at the Cairo Masonic Lodge located behind the courthouse.  The meeting begins at 7:30p.m. and is open to all veteran



The Grady County NAACP will be having their annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Saturday, September 28th at 7:00p.m. at the Grady Senior Center.  Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.  If you would like to nominate someone for the Grady County NAACP Man or Woman of the Year, the deadline is September 9th.  For more information, call LaFaye Copeland at 377-6595.
