The Providence Baptist Church is having its Vacation Bible School daily through Friday from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. The theme is "Athens: Paul's Dangerous Journey to Share the Truth."

Father’s Day Breakfast

The ladies of the Faith Temple Church on Legion Boulevard in Cairo will be sponsoring a Father's Day Breakfast Sunday at 9 a.m.  The meal is free to all local fathers.


Softball camp

Cairo High School’s annual softball camp concludes today for athletes 7-14 years old.  Young athletes age 7-10 will meet from 9 a.m.-noon and athletes 11-14 will meet from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. All participants are asked to wear clothes appropriate to play ball and bring their gloves. Annual review

The Grady County School System will be conducting the annual review, evaluation and revision of the LEA Title 1 Parent Involvement Plan for the 2013-2014 school year today at the VanLandingham Center on North Broad Street starting at 6 p.m. All stakeholders (parents, teachers, principals, administrators, community leaders, etc) are invited to attend.

Reno Baptist Church will be having its annual Vacation Bible School Monday through Thursday from 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m. with commencement on Friday at 7 p.m.  Come join the Colossal Coaster World VBS and enjoy plenty of games, prizes and fun.  The VBS Kickoff will be held on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. with a bounce house, clowns, games, snacks and lots of fun.  Classes will be available for Ages 2-Adults.

Meals program

The Seamless Summer meals program has begun at the South Elementary School's cafeteria and will be held through June 28 and July 8-26.  The program provides a free breakfast and/or lunch to anyone 18 years or younger.

Breakfast is served from 7:30 a..m.-8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The program is sponsored by the Grady County School Nutrition Program and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Lunch Break Stretch

The Roddenbery Memorial Library will offering a special program on Wednesdays throughout the summer called the "Lunch Break Stretch" from noon-1 p.m. Everyone is invited to bring their lunch and learn the park bench stretch, take a walk and return to work energized.  The group will meet on Wednesdays in the auditorium.


Gun raffle

The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce will conduct a 30-Gun Raffle beginning Monday.  Thirty guns will be raffled off during the event which will last until July 29..

Only 1,000 tickets will be sold at $30 each. They are available for purchase at the Chamber, Center Drugs, Fitness LIfe, Capital City Bank, South Georgia Outdoors, The Cairo Messenger, J&J Seamless Gutters, Designs by Craig and United National Bank.



The Cairo First Baptist Church will conclude its annual Vacation Bible School today from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. The theme for this year is "Colossal Coaster World.” The event will feature lots of exciting activities, games and events throughout the VBS.

Classes will be available for children ages 4 through finishing 5th grade.  


Volunteers needed

The South Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross is i need of local volunteers.  If you would be interested in working in the local office or helping with local disasters like single family house fires, call Wanda Purdy at 924-2026 or go to and click the volunteer tab.


Musicians sought

The Rose City Band, a Southwest Georgia Community Symphonic Band, is accepting new members who are over the age of 16 and have had at least two years of prior band experience.  The band accepts members from all over South Georgia with rehearsals on Saturday mornings in the band room at MacIntrye Middle School in Thomasville from 10 a.m.-noon.
