Humbly surrender

— By Aaron Stolarik

Like so many others in this area, I have struggled with sinus congestion. Stuffy noses, sore throats and sleepless nights have been lingering around our house for weeks. Your energy is drained and your senses are dulled. Food doesn’t taste the same, sounds are muffled and an overall haze is all around you.

It is during these times that I can really start to feel sorry for myself. I want to crawl in bed and sleep until it has passed me by. But Paul writes to the Corinthians that in fact it is in his weakness that the power of Christ shall rest upon Him. When we are our lowest point, God can be seen in us without the veil of self. But is that how we feel when we are at our breaking point? Do we lean on Him or do we simply push away?

I love what Paul is saying. He is saying that I recognize that I am a broken and sinful human being. I make bad choices every day. In fact, Paul says in Romans 7:15, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” Does this sound like a man free from sin and shame?

But Paul also knows that his actions aren’t what determines his future. His destiny has been sealed by the blood of Jesus Christ who died for him and called him to proclaim that same good news to the world. Paul knows that in the beginning and in the end it was always God who guided his path. In verse 25 Paul writes, “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” His trust is complete even in the midst of his struggle with his sin.

Christ never said that if we believe in Him we will be sinless. He never said that if we trust in Him that troubles won’t come. In fact, He said that if we trust in Him we should expect to face even more trouble. But who do we turn to in those times? Do we look up or look into a mirror?

Some of you may be reading this and thinking that you will never be free from the bondage that is holding you down. You have sinned too many times and God could never forgive someone like you. I encourage you to read Acts 8:3 where the Bible says “But Saul (Paul) began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.” What he once wanted to destroy, he now wanted to build up. What he once hated, Paul now loved. God is a surgeon and heart transplants are His specialty.

The Bible is full of men and women who were greatly used by God. Men and women who weren’t perfect, who did sin and even turned from God once in their lives. But they also are men and women who realized one day that God is right and they were wrong. Their decisions are flawed and doomed to fail. That His plan for their life lead to eternal life and their plans lead to death and destruction.

It’s not about letting God in your life. It’s realizing that He was always in it and you humbly surrender to Him. Sin has entered this world but perfection has also come and His name is Jesus.
