Shine on our face

THOMASVILLE — There is a vivid description of God’s blessings and deliverance found throughout the Bible. It is called, a shining face. It can mean intense pleasure, benevolent caring, radiant approval, manifest favor or gracious blessing.

In our human lives shining faces are exhibited by brides and grooms when they meet at the altar. I have observed shining faces on the mother and father of a newborn child. When I see graduates parade across a platform and receive a diploma or degree, their faces shine.

It is interesting to note the writers of Scripture pled for God’s face to shine on his people. The 80th Psalm asks for God’s favor. “Turn us again, O God and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.” (Psalm 80:3). God’s instruction for prayer is given to Moses. “The Lord bless thee and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee and give thee peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26).

This phrase is not found in the New Testament except in description of our Lord at time of his transfiguration. On a high mountain, Jesus, accompanied by Peter, James and John was transfigured . . . “and his face did shine as the sun and his raiment was white as light.” (Matthew 17:2).

Throughout his earthly ministry, Jesus endured a stained and smitten face; but with his mission complete and ready to go back to the Father, his face shone like the sun.

It is obvious from Scripture that the shining face of God is synonymous with his approval and blessing. We may pause to consider that God’s face may be turned away from America. He is too ashamed of our behavior to smile on our civilization. The prayer of Moses for God’s people was for them to so live in God’s favor that his face would shine upon them.Shine on our face
