Today’s sin of apathy

I read recently where Billy Graham said, “Apathy and indifference are the greatest sins of the American people.” Apparently, we have become a nation of drifters and conformists. It matters not which way the current may carry us, we are content to trust our fate to a few politicians and to social custom. It is fashionable today not to be involved. The trend is toward carelessness with regard to the world around us. Such an attitude is in direct contrast to the spirit of concern and participation which characterized the people who gave us our heritage.

Civic responsibilities and the work of the church are carried on by a very small minority of our population. The vast majority say, “I don’t want to be bothered” or “it’s not convenient at this time.” What this person is really saying is, “I’m basically selfish and my selfishness has produced in my life the sin of apathy.”

The results of this kind of thinking and living are all to obvious. We see on every hand evidence of a sick society and miserable, unhappy people. Some would say, “Well, preacher, if you think I’m unhappy, you ought to see me on my day off or on the weekend.” The trouble is I do see you and what I see oftentimes is what you are trying to hide . . . a vague dissatisfaction with life, meaninglessness in the ceaseless cycle of selfish searching.

The man who gave his life to cure this sin expressed his opinion in these words, “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” God’s Word is plain and simple and there can be no mistake. We must be conscientious in our pursuit of His will and that means participation in church, community and neighborhood activities. God created us to live with other people and he instituted the church and we cannot secede from God’s plan for human happiness and be what He would have us to be.
