Give Him your all

When I was in middle school, I remember being terrified one evening because report cards were coming home the next day. I kept thinking that there was no way I was passing a particular class. I knew how much effort I had put in the class, and I also knew that my grades would probably reflect that.

Although I wasn’t raised as a Christian, I remember going to bed that night and praying to God for Him to help me with my report card. I started trying to make a deal with Him, even saying I would do something in order to get a passing grade.

When the time came for report cards to be handed out, I slowly opened mine, with trembling hands, and to my great surprise, I got a passing grade. God must have listened to me, I thought, and for a moment, I was truly grateful. That feeling, unfortunately, faded quickly and I never held up my side of the deal.

As I said before, I deserved the failing grades I was going to get. I didn’t put forth the effort required to get a good grade, but I expected my situation to improve with no effort on my part.

Maybe you know someone who treats their spiritual life like that. They don’t pray, they don’t serve  and their attitude reflects what is in their heart. Yet when times get tough, they offer up a quick prayer.

He deserves so much more than we give Him. He made it all and He deserves it all — your family, your relationships your job and even your own life. If that seems too extreme, perhaps we should take a look at what scripture says.

In Romans 12, Paul writes, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship.”

True worship is giving Christ everything, your bodies as a living sacrifice. When animals were given as sacrifices, they didn’t have much of a choice. Sacrifices can’t change their mind or ask for more time. If we truly are living as sacrifices, then we have no say in the matter. Our hopes, our desires and our decisions no longer are our own.

I would like to close by asking you to take a serious look at your commitment to God. Are you a living sacrifice, completely surrendered and obedient? Perhaps, if you are honest, you haven’t surrendered your life. You like to feel in control and the thought of letting go scares you.

Remember this, when you let go, there isn’t a feeling of helplessness but a feeling of assurance. Instead of feeling weighted down by your troubles, He carries them for you. Seek God and let Him show you what He has in store for your life.
