Trust Him to carry your burdens

Becoming a parent was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I have seen my children grow physically and mentally.

Like most parents, I would say that my children are good kids, although I have seen some not so “good” moments. But as a parent, I have also seen how my children watch my every move, listen to my every word and often imitate both.

They want to be like their parents and our lives are their example. They trust that we won’t harm them or put them in danger. It is that childlike faith that helps them to grow into the women they will be one day. Do we have that same faith as adults and as followers of Christ?

Jesus says in Matthew 18:3-4, “Then he said, ‘I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.”’ Why are children considered to be humble? I believe this verse tends to point to their lack of self-confidence and having to rely on their parents for everything. Shelter, food and clothing are provided to them without expectation on their behalf.

My daughter often likes to take things to the cash register and try and purchase them on her own. I watch as she hands the cashier her item and eagerly awaits them to scan it and give it back to her. Then comes the part where she needs to pay for that item. You see, my daughter doesn’t have any money; she depends on me to provide her with everything she receives. So when the cashier asks for money to pay, she can’t rely on herself but looks to me. She wants to be independent, but she simply doesn’t have the means without her parents.

What an illustration of what God does for us each and every day. Everything we have is from Him and we should depend on no one else but Him. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 4:7, “What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if everything you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift?” Is that our mindset toward the “things” we have been given? Most people feel as if we have earned it by hard work and stick-to-it-ness. God provides us with the strength, the ability and the opportunity to do what we do and to have what we have. Everything comes from Him and is a gift. Our dependence on Him is not a disability but a great reassurance that He loves us and doesn’t want us to scratch and claw our way through life.

Matthew 11:28 sums it all up for us in a few simple verses, “Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”’ Don’t struggle through another day when help is so near. Take Him at His word and trust in Him to carry your burdens. Let God guide your paths and lead you to a place of rest. He is ready, are you?
