Plug into the power — part 2

This is the second of a five-part series on how to plug in to the power of the cross. The power available to the born again child of God is greater than most of us ever imagine.  The scripture says that God has freely given us all things that pertain to life and godliness. If it has been given, then how do we access it?

I believe the second way we plug in to the power of God is by serving others. The humility of serving others opens the door for great power to flow in our lives.  Serving others demonstrates psychological security, spiritual maturity and establishes us as a leader. People are always looking for someone who is humble enough to serve. Jesus demonstrated His love and service of others in the following passage from John 13:1-17 (NKJ).

“Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, are You washing my feet?’   “Jesus answered and said to him, ‘What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.’ Peter said to Him, ‘You shall never wash my feet!’ Jesus answered him, ‘If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.’   Simon Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!’ Jesus said to him, ‘He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.’ For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, ‘You are not all clean.’ So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, ‘Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”

This is such a beautiful example of humility and service to others.  On the very night that Jesus was to give His life for the salvation of mankind, He chose to teach His final lesson to His disciples by humbling himself and washing their feet.

I thought it was interesting that Jesus asked the disciples, “Do you know what I have done to you?”  If I had been there, I would have probably said, “You just washed our feet!” In verse 15, He answers the question by saying “I have given you an example that you should do as I have done to you.” The example was not “how to wash feet in three easy steps” or “how to start a foot washing movement.” It was how to walk in humility, serve others even in menial tasks and how to do it when you are at the point of need yourself. Jesus was teaching them how to be a servant leader, not a CEO or a selfie!

Our culture has come a long way from this Jesus inspired example. According to a December 2013 issue of USA Today, “Oxford Dictionaries' word of the year for 2013 definitely captures a snapshot of our social-media-obsessed movement.  That's right — it's "selfie." A selfie or selfy is defined as: (n.) a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website. Selfies are interesting, but not powerful. I apologize for having to say this, but there is no power in a “me mindset.”

I challenge you to make your 2014 word of the year “OTHERS.”  It’s a sure way to plug in to the power of God in your life!
