It’s time to open the door

As a child, one of my favorite scripture passages came from Psalm 24. Most people love Psalm 23 and can often quote it from memory. Somehow as a child, I wandered one chapter over and found a life-changing scripture that has been a foundational concept for me all of my Christian life.

Palm 24:7-10 says, “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah” KJV

The psalmist wrote this exhortation to the people as the Ark of the Covenant was approaching Mount Zion to dwell in a tent David had built during the years before the temple was built. It has been called “The Song of Advent” and “The Song of the Ascension.” Also, it has also been used to describe an individual’s response to the presence of God as in Revelation 3:20. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” NKJ

As a child, I knew very little theology about the advent, the coming of the Messiah as a babe in Bethlehem. I had even less concerning Christ’s ascension to heaven after the crucifixion and resurrection.  However, the simple gospel I could grasp. If I lifted my eyes to look for the Lord, if I stood at the gateway of my life and opened the door when I saw His presence, He would come in. It would not be a matter of anything I did, but it would be the way the King of glory chose to reveal himself to me a simple, young child. The concept that God wanted to come into my heart and make me His dwelling place was greater than words could express!

In verses seven and 10 of the passage, the question is posed, “Who is the King of glory?” The answer comes declaring a strong, mighty, battle winning God. He is designated as the Lord of hosts and the King of glory. I now know that Lord is the word for Jehovah and hosts refers to heaven’s army. What a King we serve! He is mighty and on our side!

The Message Bible renders this passage humorously. “Wake up, you sleepyhead city! Wake up, you sleepyhead people! King-Glory is ready to enter. Who is this King-Glory? God, armed and battle-ready.  Wake up, you sleepyhead city! Wake up, you sleepyhead people! King-Glory is ready to enter. Who is this King-Glory? God-of-the-Angel-Armies: he is King-Glory.”

Are you awake or are you a spiritual sleepyhead?  Is our city awake?  Are we looking for the King of glory and His angel armies? Is your door open and have you prepared room for a Savior who loves you and longs to be with you? Are we fighting our personal battles and our city battles alone or have we invited the God-of- Angel- Armies to become the leader of the fight?  It’s time to open the door!
