Governing the republic without using a Bible

In reading from the Book of II Samuel, I was struck by two verses in the 23rd chapter.

“The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear  of God. And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the run riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.”

 — (II Samuel 23:3-4 KJV)

It occurred to me that every elected official would do well to have these verses before them as they go about their duties and responsibilities. The phrase, “He that ruleth over men must be just” stands out as a moral compass indicating the expectation of integrity, honesty and common sense. The same sentence references the responsibility to perform their tasks, “in the fear of God.”

The consequences of failure in leadership by those who rule over us are the opposite of what the scripture says in the latter verse.

Godly leaders are as the light of the morning and as the tender grass springing  out of the earth by clear shining after rain. It is the observation of those who record the feelings  of our population that a considerable majority feel the light has not only flickered, but has gone out. Our economic condition indicates withered grass and continued drought.

Certainly, this observation does not apply to all our leadership. There are many Godly men and women of impeccable character who care and who strive to govern out cities, states and nation with wisdom and compassion. For that we should all be grateful.

However, David’s advice has strong implications for those who chisel at the foundation of this republic and seek to govern without the guidebook of God’s word, the Bible.
