What is He doing now?

THOMASVILLE — After most big events there is a blurb in a program or an announcement concerning the future.  At a wedding the program will say, “the couple will reside at such and such address after a honeymoon trip to …”

After a retirement party, the announcement might be, “Bob plans to play lots of golf, fish daily and watch old movies.”  Everyone wants to know what’s next.  Spiritually we ask the same question.

The incarnation, His life, His death and resurrection was the big thirty-three year event for Jesus.  So what’s He doing now?  I remember as a child hearing a song by Johnny Cash. “That Lucky Old Sun (Son). The refrain said, “While that lucky old sun (son) got nothin’ to do, but roll around heaven all day.” The writer was contrasting his life of sorrow, demand and pain to the easy life of the sun in the sky and the son of God in heaven with nothing to do but take it easy!

I think we would all agree that Jesus deserves a time of “nothing to do” but I think the scripture clearly expounds four activities on Jesus’ to do list. The first is His commitment to intercession. Hebrews 4:15-16 tells us that He intercedes for us as someone who understands what we are going through. “  For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.  Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need”.   Hebrews 7:24-25 says, “But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them”. How awesome is that?  Jesus is interceding for all who know Him and all who want to know Him!

The second activity of Jesus in heaven is as our advocate.  Hebrews 10:10-14 positions Jesus as our lawyer/advocate with Father God. “By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.  But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool.  For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified”. He’s on our side at the right hand of the Father.

Thirdly, Jesus is building and protecting the church by giving grace as in Ephesians 4:7, by giving revelation as in Galatians 1:11-12 and giving ministries as in Romans 12:4-8.  When Jesus left planet earth He sent the Holy Spirit to teach and grow up the body of Christ.  He organized the flow of ministry through men and women ordained to serve His church. Consider with me Ephesians 4:11-13. “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”

Finally, Jesus is busy preparing a place for us.  He told his disciples before the crucifixion in John 14:1-3 that He was going to prepare a place for them and that He would come again to receive them.  In Philippians 3:20-21 we find this revelation of citizenship.

“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,  who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.” This is not my home – heaven is! I Thessalonians 4:15-18 says we should comfort one another with the knowledge that Jesus is coming back to take us to heaven. “For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.  For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.  Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.”

I’m so glad Jesus didn’t quit after the cross and the resurrection.  I’m glad He has a lot on His “to do” list and that it’s all for you and me.
