Ever present hands

Hands tell a great deal about a person. When we shake hands with a person, the hands themselves speak volumes about life and work and personality of the individual. Some present a stiff hand that does not fold. Some present a limp hand. Some have a soft hand. Others have rough, calloused, powerful hands.

“The hand is a masterpiece, simultaneously it feels and it acts. It acts as if endowed with sight. It has wielded with equal skill the flint knife of the primitive hunter, the blacksmith  hammer, the woodcutter’s axe, the farmer’s plow, the sword of the medieval knight, the controls of the modern aviator, the artisit’s bruSh, the journalist’s pen and the threads of the silk weaver. It is able to kill and to blesss, to steal and to give, to sow grain and to throw grenades.”

In order to better understand the nature of God, we sometimes ascribe to God man-like qualities. We speak of the hands of God to lend clarity and emphasis to the guidance and care of God. In one of the art museums of our country is a famous piece of sculpture known as “The Hand of God.” Cut of a rough hewn block rises a strong right hand and lying in that hand are some human figures just taking shape. The visualization of this art almost makes us sway to the rhythm of “He’s got the whole world in his hands.”

Isaiah expressed this truth in the scriptures. He sang, “I will help thee, yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” May we not forget that in this day of international confusion and national unrest, the hands of God are ever present to uphold us and to guide the path of mankind in every generation.
