Be diligent watching over promise

— All of God's promises are “yes and amen” according to the Word of God. That means, if God said it, you can take it to the bank.

Why are we so full of doubt and unbelief when it comes to believing what He says in His Word?  Why do we not see more tangible results from our prayers, when we are praying according to what the Word of God says?  These are legitimate questions that need to be addressed.

Even Jesus, it is stated, could do no mighty works in His own hometown because of the people’s unbelief. How it must have grieved His heart to be limited in what He could do for the very people He grew up around. Basically, He was thought of as one of the “home boys” and must have blended in well with the other young men growing up with Him.

The only comment made about Him as a young boy is that He had a lot of wisdom and understanding for His age, according to the religious leaders to whom He listened and asked questions. His own people were too familiar with the human side of Jesus to recognize who He was.  They could not receive God's promises for them from this vessel.

There are numerous examples from the scriptures of those who have persevered through adverse circumstances to receive the promise that they had been petitioning the Lord and believing for.  Barren women like Hannah and Sarah suffered ridicule but ultimately they received what they had been promised. Hebrews 11, the great chapter on the faith, lists many others.

Abraham cut covenant with God Himself, but he had to stand guard over the sacrifice so that the birds and wild animals would not consume the sacrifice. Sometimes God has spoken a promise to us, but we have not been watchful over that word and allowed birds of prey to steal what we should have been diligently watching over until God did what He said He would do.

I think one of the promise stealers is our tongue. Out of the abundance of the heart, our mouth speaks. God had to silence Zachariah supernaturally (striking him dumb for nine months) in order that his unbelief would not nullify the promise of the one who would coming announcing the Kingdom of God.

Mary, Jesus' mother, on the other hand, allowed her simple faith in God to carry the Promise of God in spite of all the misunderstanding and ridicule she would receive, simply stating “be it unto me according to Your word.”

Has God spoken a promise to you personally?  Sometimes we try to “help God out” by making something come to pass — a work of our own efforts.  Abraham did this with Hagar, Sarah's servant girl, who birthed Ishmael.  He and his descendants have been a thorn in Issac and his descendants sides ever since.

I personally have been presumptuous about how God was going to fulfill a promise to me and very likely delayed what God had promised. He had to wait on me to realize that it was His promise and that only He could fulfill it in the way that would bring honor to Him.

Meditating on His promises, setting a guard over our hearts and mouth, will position us to receive what God has promised us. Doubt and unbelief are reinforced by our thoughts and our confessions.

We must be diligent to watch over that promise until God brings it to pass.  Chase the birds of doubt and unbelief away by meditating on and confessing the truth of God's Word.
