Are you living a life that is holy?

— What kind of power does the church have in today’s society? What do you see in the people of God around you that still amazes you and proves to you that God is still on His throne? Do we see miracles occurring in our midst, and do we see people being saved? Not just saved, but being completely destroyed and re-made by the power of the Holy Spirit? A new creation formed by God and used to fulfill His purpose and to give glory back to the Father? I want that kind of life, and I want my wife and kids to have that kind of life: giving God the glory in everything we say and everything we do.

Psalm 24:3-7 says, “Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god. They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God their Savior.” In this Psalm, David simply asks, who can even be in my very presence? Who has clean hands and a clean heart? Who trusts in God and not an idol? Much can be said of the world today and of those who call themselves Christians. How many among us claim to serve Christ, yet our hands are filthy with the things of this world? Whose heart has been claimed by someone or something other than God Almighty? Our brothers and sisters, in Christ, are falling by the wayside and succumbing to their wants and desires. They aren’t worthy of being in the presence of a holy God but are living lives far from Him.

My heart breaks for those people. I know we are to go out and proclaim the Gospel to the lost, but it is the lost that are sitting in our own churches that have been a burden to me. They aren’t showing the unbeliever how Christians are called to live. In fact, how many Christians couldn’t be distinguished among unbelievers? 1 Thessalonians 4:7 says, “For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.”  Some would consider a holy life to be boring, but I submit to you that living a holy life is better than anything the world can offer you.

Staying close to God and seeing Him work in your life is the most rewarding gift you can have. Notice again, David says that God will bless those who live holy lives, but what about those who don’t? What is God going to do for them? I confess I have lived my life, at times, distant from God. It is in those times where I felt alone, almost as if I was in a desert all by myself. I would ask God why I feel so alone. It was in those moments when God revealed to me that my sin was separating us. My attention was far from God, but God wasn’t far from me. He wasn’t working in my life and that broke my heart.

As I write this, I confess to you also that I’m not living a life of holiness. I will say, however, that my heart has yet again been broken, and holiness is what I will strive to attain. It may make me seem crazy to some, boring to others, but my happiness doesn’t come from others. It comes from God and giving Him all the glory. I want to be a true light for Christ. There are too many artificial lights that claim to be shining for Him, but I want to be a lamp on the lampstand for God. Artificial light draws its power from a manmade source, but a flame draws its power from God. That is the kind of light I want to shine.

In love, I want to encourage those of you who claim Christ, to look deep within your soul. How clean are your hands and your heart? You may be reading this, and you don’t know Christ. You have said or done some things you regret. The world will tell you they are mistakes, but I ask you to consider it to be much more. Consider it a holy conviction of the Holy Spirit leading you away from that life. I beg you to ask God to show Himself to you in a mighty way and reveal His plan for your life. Not for the glory of man, but for the glory of God. He loves you, and He will show you His path. Are you willing to follow Him?
