Best things are free

— In reflecting on the years of my life, I have come to some startling conclusions. In a world that has forever tried to lead all of us to want more and bigger and more exciting things and experiences, I am convinced that the most satisfying and wonderful pleasures have been little things that were absolutely free.

I have visited botanical gardens and magnificent man-made floral wonders, but driving down a country road and viewing the splash of color growing naturally beside the road and in the ditches is more spectacular than all man can create.

I have enjoyed seeing my teams compete and sometimes win earthly glory, but watching a little baby take his or her first steps surpasses the momentary exuberance of athletic accomplishments.

A sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean or a sunset over the Pacific is infinitely more beautiful than all the art galleries of the world combined. Listening to the thrill of a mockingbird, hearing raindrops on the roof or the roll of thunder is more satisfying than a symphonic orchestra.

Looking into the eyes of my wife of 55 years, I can see all the way to the bottom of her heart and know she loves me is far, far more satisfying and wonderful than a king’s ransom.

In fact, to have a personal relationship with God who created me and with his Son, Jesus Christ, gives me a peace which passes all understanding and enables me to focus on divine hope in the midst of seemingly hopeless issues in our world today.

All of these treasures about which I have spoken have not been earned or deserved or cost me anything other than my personal initiative in embracing them. I am so thankful to be alive because of Jesus’ wording, “I am come that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”
