Listen with your heart

THOMASVILLE — One of the kindest and most needed gifts we can give a person is the gift of listening. We all need someone to whom we can talk, share our triumphs and failures, our frustrations and our excitement, our hurts and our joys.

I heard a person who is shut-in say, “The worst part of living alone is I have no one to talk to.” It is no wonder some individuals talk to themselves, or to their pets, or to inanimate objects.

Unfortunately, many people live with, work with and worship with others; however, they never have the opportunity to express feelings or opinions. These individuals may exchange greetings, dispense information or teach; but no one really lets them talk.

Far too much of our listening is tuned to the electronic world in which we live. The television talks, the internet talks; but they do not listen. They can’t know who you are or why you feel like you do.

It is my opinion that sometimes people who live in the same house, eat at the same table and love each other are not good listeners. Often, we are much more likely to do too much talking and not enough listening.

In fact, the listening about which I am writing is not merely hearing with one’s ears. It is listening with the heart. We all need to remember to let others talk and express themselves. Encourage other, especially those close to you, to share their heart. You will be blessed.
