Chained dog takes down drug suspect
By Patti Dozier
THOMASVILLE — One would think the narcotics agents chasing a drug suspect would take down the individual, but a chained dog did the honors.
Thomas County/Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division agents were told late Friday afternoon that Chester Herbert would be transporting powder cocaine in an older model Mercury Marquis.
“We were told he would be on the south side in the Wright Street/Fletcher Street area,” said Kevin Lee, Thomas County/Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division commander.
Agents began looking for the champagne-colored car and found it in the 300 block of Fern. Herbert, 28, 123 Holloway St., was standing beside the car.
The suspect, who is out of jail on bond on a charge of selling cocaine, ran when he saw lawmen.
“One of the agents saw him throw down two cell phones and a bag that contained green plastic bags of powder cocaine,” Lee said.
The suspect, chased by agents, ran to the rear of a house. “He ran toward Hopkins Street. Agents were chasing him on foot and by vehicle,” the commander explained.
A dog chained in the rear of a Hopkins residence grabbed Herbert by the pants leg. The suspect fell.
The dog did not loosen his grip on the suspect.
“The owner had to remove the dog from the pants leg of Herbert,” Lee said.
In addition to about $300 worth of cocaine, officers found $1,055 in U.S. currency in Herbert’s pants pocket.
The suspect is charged with cocaine possession with intent to distribute and obstruction.
Herbert was denied bond and remains in the Thomas County Jail.
