Bold burglars choose flat-screen televisions

THOMASVILLE — Bold burglars have made off with a number of flat-screen televisions during the past two months.
For the most part, burglars have gone solely for the TVs in the daytime incidents.
“In a couple of the burglaries, counter equipment has been taken also,” said Lt. Tim Watkins, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office chief investigator.
Last week, a gun cabinet containing valuable firearms was next to a flat-screen TV. Burglars took the television and left the weapons.
“They’re all over the county,” Watkins said about burglary locations.
In an incident last week, a student left her home at 7:30 a.m. to go to school. When her father arrived at home at 9 a.m., their home had been burglarized. The family’s flat-screen TV was taken.
On the same day, deputies arriving at a house to serve papers discovered the residence had been burglarized. A flat-screen television was taken.
Entry to the houses has been gained in various ways. Where there was no sign of forced entry, the houses were unlocked, or locks were manipulated.
“Some doors have been kicked in,” Watkins explained.
A flat-screen television was recovered from a stolen vehicle stopped in Barwick for a traffic violation. However, Watkins said, the serial number on the TV does not match the number recorded on the purchase agreement entered by the resident who reported it stolen.
The televisions stolen are valued from $700 to $3,000.
Watkins said a “substantial” reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of burglars.
“We’re asking neighbors to be good neighbors and look out for their neighbor’s’ houses,” Watkins said Monday. “We’re asking patrol to step up security.”
Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to call 225-3333.
