THOMASVILLE — The investigation into the death of a Meigs police officer is continuing, according to a Meigs official.
“We don’t know anything yet,” said Levon Gassett, Meigs mayor pro tem.
Suicide is believed to be the cause of death of officer Jimmy Brooks, Gassett told the Times-Enterprise Wednesday.
“He was a real likable fella,” the mayor pro tem said.
The death is being investigated by the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office. Neither Mitchell County Sheriff W.E. Bozeman nor investigators returned repeated phone calls.
Neither did Mitchell County Coroner Jim Jamerson return a phone call.
Gassett said the death occurred Tuesday afternoon. An autopsy is being performed, he said.
Meigs police Chief Jimmy Layton could not be reached for comment. No one answered the phone at Meigs Police Department Wednesday afternoon.
Brooks, 47, had been a Meigs police officer for several months.
Gossett said the officer visited businesses and let citizens know he was available if they needed anything.
“It just shocked us,” Gassett said. “We don’t know what would have drove him to do such a thing.”
The mayor pro tem described Brooks as “happy, up beat.”
“It just floored us,” he said.
