Mayoral candidates encounter opposition

Patti Dozier

THOMASVILLE — Three days into the candidate-qualifying period for the November general election, mayors in three of Thomas County’s small municipalities have opposition.

The qualifying period ended Wednesday in Ochlocknee, where incumbent Mayor Ronelle Searcy has no opposition, but seven people have qualified to seek the four city council seats up for re-election.

Meigs Mayor Annie Doris Lovejoy reportedly will not seek re-election. She could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Andrew Wurst and Viva Bass qualified early this week to seek the Meigs mayoral post.

Three Meigs city council seats are to be decided this year. As of noon Wednesday, Orville Kreager had qualified to seek a council seat.

In Barwick, Walt Yost and Scott McCammon have qualified for mayor, a position held by Ned Simmons.

Ron Collins is seeking the Boston mayoral post held by Danny Groover. Beverly Collins and Ronnie Harris are seeking Boston council positions.

Coolidge Mayor Diane H. Causey has qualified to seek re-election. Willie Henderson, Janice Moore and John Blaha have qualified to run for Coolidge council seats.

In Ochlocknee, incumbent councilmembers Raiford Long, Lillie Bell Williams and Joseph Lewis are seeking re-election. Others seeking council posts are Michael Herring, Faye Hembry, L.D. Johnson and Roscoe Daphney.
