Meigs bank to close Dec. 31

THOMASVILLE — The CBC National Bank branch in Meigs will close Dec. 31.

“We were never able to make money in the small market,” said Mike Sanchez, CBC National Bank president and chef executive officer.

Meigs never had the “critical mass” necessary for the bank, Sanchez said.

CBC National Bank headquarters are in Fernandina, Fla. CBC also has banks in northeast Florida and in South Carolina.

The Meigs bank employs three full time and one part time.

“It came down to a business decision,” Sanchez explained.

Meigs Mayor Cynthia Chaney expressed sadness about the bank closing.

She hopes to secure a check-cashing service for the community. “I think that would be perfect for what the community needs,” Chaney said.

The mayor is in touch with two companies that offer check-cashing services.

Also, she would like to establish transportation several times daily to Pelham, five miles away, and to Thomasville, 20 miles away, twice a week. A fee would be charged for the transportation service.

Judy Horton, a Meigs resident for 44 years, is concerned about what some Meigs residents will do after the bank closes.

“So many people  in this town do not have rides. They walk everywhere they go,” Horton explained.

Describing the bank as “a rock,” Horton said many residents cashed checks at the bank, and farmers had accounts at the financial institution.

“Everything closed, but we still had the bank,” Horton said.

She said the Meigs post office is decreasing hours it will be open, “but it will still be there.”

Horton added, “But we can’t get a check cashed over there.”
