Whigham Police Department receives grant from state

Staff report

THOMASVILLE — The Whigham Police Department was recently awarded a public safety partnership grant in the amount of $10,000 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety in Atlanta.

The incentive grant that will last through September is designed for smaller law enforcement agencies that have partnered with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and excelled in participating in highway safety incentives, and making their communities safe during the previous year.

The criteria used to determine the agencies awarded the grant were reporting enforcement data to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, participation in meetings of the local traffic enforcement network, hosting network meetings and submitting applications to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety’s annual law enforcement awards program, Governor’s Challenge.

According to Capt. Bruce Lowe of the Whigham Police Department, the grant will help purchase safety equipment and other beneficial equipment to continue to make the community safe.

The goal of the grant is to reward agencies for their proactive approach to traffic safety and to provide them with the necessary tools to effectively continue their efforts.
