Brookwood splits Saturday doubleheader at Varnedoe

THOMASVILLE —

Brookwood  held off a late charge from Southland to win 8-7 in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader, then mustered just five hits in its 5-0 shutout loss to Tiftarea in the finale.

The Warriors, which moved to TU’s Varnedoe Field due to swampy conditions at Brookwood,  overcame a 4-1 deficit in Game 1 when catcher Chandler Stencel pelted a grand slam – his third home run of the year – to take the lead. Brookwood also added another two runs that inning, then one in the fifth before Southland churned in four runs in the seventh but came a score short.

“Our kids came out swinging the bats,” Brookwood coach Ken Johnson said. “The ball was carrying real well. Then we struggled in the second game against [Tiftarea’s] submarine pitcher.”

The Warriors allowed runs in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings while going scorless and leaving nine runners stranded with just five hits in Game 2.

Johnson attributed the atypical doubleheader as a reason behind the untimely overlap.

“When you’re playing a doubleheader, it’s usually against the same team,” he said. “[Tiftarea] had their guys rested and ready to go, whereas we were coming off a close game, and had thrown our No. 1 pitcher.”

Brookwood (15-8, 2-4), now eyes a playoff game to determine the final seeding in GISA 3-AAA before the start of the state tournament on Friday.

The Warriors travel to take on Deerfield-Windsor in a fight for the No. 3 seed. The loser will retain the fourth and final spot, and travel to take on Pinewood. The winner will play at John Milledge.
