Cairo ends season with playoffs losses

THOMASVILLE —

Cairo was eliminated from the AAAA state tournament on Friday after a pair of 10-7 and 9-1 losses to Cross Creek.

The Syrupmakers, however, exemplified their youthful, underdog demeanor until the final out, coach Ron Best said.

Cairo fell behind 6-0 through the first two innings of Game 1 then 8-3 through five before churning in four in the sixth to bring the game to within one run.

“Even though we were down five runs, we were still very competitive,” coach Ron Best said. “Then we got a few hits and runs and it was like: ‘OK, here we go.’”

Cross Creek responded with a pair of runs during the ensuing inning, then held Cairo scoreless.

Both teams were tied at one through four innings in Game 2 before Cross Creek parlayed its earlier momentum into its 9-1 win.

“We hung with them, but once they got rolling, we just weren’t able to match the intensity and motivation they had,” Best said.

The coach was poignant when speaking of the loss, and upheld and upbeat manner.

After all, Best was wary of whether or not Cairo would even make the playoffs.

“We did the best we could,” he said. “We knew we didn’t always have the strongest lineup, but we capitalized on our strengths.”
