Believe in life

The fundamental tenet of the Christian faith is the concept of life. This does not simply mean the functioning of all the metabolic processes of the human brain and body that can be registered and measured by scientific instruments. It suggests far more than this. Life for a believer is both a quality and a quantity.

When Jesus said “. . . that whosoever believeth in me should not perish, but have everlasting life,” he was referring to the nature  of a person’s present existence, as well as the promise of heaven. Early in John’s Gospel, Jesus is represented as life. “In him was life; and the life was the light of men’” (John 1:4).

The opposite of light is darkness. A person who rejects Jesus, who is light, is living in darkness. The connotation of darkness is the hazards of blindness. It is a life of disasters, mistakes, confusion and helplessness.

It is quite possible for a person to possess some of the qualities of light and life, but never embrace faith in Jesus Christ. Common sense and proper manners can masquerade as life. The supreme test is the expectation of eternal life.

An atheist or unbeliever in the Gospel must conclude that this existence in human form is all there is. They refuse or dare not exercise faith in that which they cannot prove. These individuals apparently cannot grasp the idea that the Creator, whom we call God, could be the reason we exist, but cannot make possible eternal life. It is a question of child-like faith.

Frankly, it seems unreasonable to reject the claims of Christianity when there is no other hope for the longing mankind has for immortality. Do I want to see my mother and father again? Do I want to be with family and friends in heaven? Do I want to live in a perfect environment where no evil or disease  or death will ever happen again? The answer is an emphatic yes.

I choose to believe in life. I believe by faith Jesus is God in the flesh and that he came lived, died and rose again that I might have life abundant and everlasting.
