Sun Conference honors two TU athletes

Watkins, Palmer named Player of the Week

THOMASVILLE —

The Sun Conference on Monday named two Thomas athletes Player of the Week in separate sports.

Senior men’s basketball player Justyn Watkins and baseball sophomore Tyler Palmer became the first selections in program history for each sport to earn the honor.

“It shows that the hard work is paying off for these student-athletes in the weight room and practice,” Thomas athletic director Mike Lee said. “I’m glad for the program getting recognition but even happier for these kids getting recognized.”

Watkins led TU to its first win over a ranked opponent with 31 points in the Night Hawks’ 96-74 victory over then-No. 6 Embry Riddle. He then scored over half of the Night Hawks’ buckets in Saturday’s 67-66 road loss to Ave Maria with 37 points.

Palmer shined in the Night Hawks’ three-game series at Florida Memorial last weekend; his first games of the season.

Palmer slugged 12 hits in 16 at-bats, stole four bases, scored six runs and drove in three.

“He changes the whole dynamic of our lineup,” said Lee, who is also TU’s baseball coach. “We’re tickled to have him.”

Watkins will be in action again today when Thomas hosts Johnson & Wales. Palmer will resume in the Night Hawks’ road series against Webber International on Friday and Saturday.
