TU forced to reschedule rivalry tilt with Valdosta State

Had the dugouts not been under a few feet of water on Tuesday morning, Thomas’ game with visiting Valdosta State may have been good to go.

TU coach Mike Lee made the call to tentatively postpone the game around lunch time on Wednesday. He and VSU coach Greg Guilliams are already in the works to reschedule the rivalry tilt to “either April 1 or 15; somewhere in there,” Lee said.

The extra rain that reached Thomasville last night was the ultimate factor.

“We’ve had some drainage problems in the recent weeks,” Lee said. “It seemed the best way to go.”

Yet not all is lost. Lee attributed that had Wednesday’s game been against a team with further distance to travel, TU would’ve likely canceled it altogether. Because Valdosta is just 40 miles away, the two schools will almost assuredly get their pair of scheduled games in this season, Lee said.

“We enjoy going over there and when we can get them here. We certainly look at it as a rivalry,” said Lee, a Valdosta State alumnus. “It’s always good playing D2 [teams] and a good one like they are.”

Lee added that he was going to use Wednesday’s game to make minor adjustments as Thomas heads into another conference series at Northwood this weekend. The Night Hawks, however, got a good look last weekend against a USC-Beaufort team that is quite similar.

“They swing the bat alot like [Beaufort] does and we do,” Lee said of Northwood, which downed NAIA No. 3 Embry-Riddle in one of three contests last weekend. “They’re a team that when they get rolling are in pretty good shape.”
