Surveying to begin on power line corridor

THOMASVILLE — Some property owners along a power line corridor have given permission for surveys of their land.

The new transmission line — from Pavo to Eason Crossing — will replace electrical lines that have served southwest Georgia since 1927.

Georgia Transmission Corp. (GTC) will install the power line.

GTC, a not-for-profit Tucker company, is owned and operated by Georgia's 39 electric membership corporations and works with Georgia Power Co. and the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia to plan electric grids.

Jeannine Haynes, GTC public affairs director, told Thomas County commissioners this week 21 of 24 property owners from Ozell Road to Eason Crossing have given permission for surveys.

From Ozell Road to Pavo, 35 of 54 landowners have given survey permission, Haynes said.

“Our next step will be to hold open-house meetings,” she said.

Affected property owners will be notified about the meetings via certified mail. Advertisements will appear in the Times-Enterprise.

Meetings for property owners from Ozell Road to Eason Crossing will be in late May at the Boston Community Center.

In late June, meetings for affected landowners from Ozell Road to Pavo will be held at Salem Baptist Church.

Dates for the meetings have not been set. Meetings will be conducted twice at each site on the same day, Haynes said.

Haynes told commission feedback she is receiving is “the process is going well.”

Georgia Transmission proposes to build a substation and install 13 miles of new electrical transmission lines in Thomas County.

Power poles would not be erected on public rights of way, but some rights of way will be needed, Haynes said in February.

Easement acquisition in the $14 million project will begin in the second quarter of this year.

Clearing of land is set for the first quarter of 2015, with service from the new lines to begin in third and fourth quarters of 2015.
