Memorial services for Joe M. Thomas, 87, of Cairo, are at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church, Cairo.  Pastor Johnny Moore will officiate. Mr. Thomas passed away at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville on Friday, May 2, 2014. Mr. Thomas was born on July 12, 1926, in Cairo to the late Mike Thomas and Minnie White Thomas. He served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Cairo Masonic Lodge #299 and a member of the local American Legion Post, #122. He was married to Mabel Elkins Thomas, who survives. He was a merchant for 30 years and after his retirement he became a pecan farmer for several years. Joe was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include wife, Mabel Elkins Thomas, of Cairo; his children, Shayne Thomas McCullough and her husband, Robert, of Destin, Fla., Chuck Thomas and his wife, Chloe, of Cairo, Mickey Thomas and his wife, Rachel, of Palm Desert, Calif.; grandchildren, Kit Thomas, of St. George Island, Fla., Chase Thomas, of Valdosta, Dustin Thomas of Cairo, Jordan McCullough Hecht (Matt), of Savannah, Caid McCullough of Auburn, Ala., Taylor Thomas, of Hollywood, Calif., Austin Kary, of San Marcos, Calif., Alena and Alex Harlingten of Palm Desert, Calif.; great-grandchild, Oliver Harlingten, of Palm Desert, Calif.; sister, Zena Thomas Brown, of Cairo; nieces, Michelle Brown Rackley and Sheila Brown Bradley of Cairo. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Lorraine P. “Lokie” Thomas. Memorials may be made in Mr. Thomas' memory to American Legion Post #122, P. O. Box 1234, Cairo, Ga. 39828, Cairo Masonic Lodge #299, c/o Bob Murphy, 3553 Highway 111 South, Cairo, Ga. 39828, and First United Methodist Church, 318 South Broad St., Cairo, Ga. 39828.
