Revisiting Central's dramatic OT soccer win

THOMASVILLE —

There are no draws in region play. Someone must walk away a winner.

It took two overtimes and a series of penalty kick rounds to give Thomas County Central an 8-7 win over Harris County on Friday.

The Jackets opened with a 1-0 lead, then fell behind, 2-1, at the half. After a pair of goals apiece in the second half, Central’s Eduardo Rodriguez notched a header in the final 15 minutes to force overtime.

The extra periods consisted of two, five-minute halfs with a two-minute break in between. Neither team scored, which propelled the game to the final stage: penalty kicks.

Central and Harris County each notched their five, which then forced a ‘first player to miss loses’ scenario.

Austin McCloud banked the final shot to take an 8-7 lead, and Harris missed the ensuing kick to end the game.

“Our adrenaline was pumping the entire time,” Central boys coach Kristy Peeples said. “I’ve never seen the boys so focused.”

Central continues region play at home this Friday against Lee County.
