TU student awarded SEACM scholarship

THOMASVILLE — Brittney Mayhill, a senior in the Medical Laboratory Science program at Thomas University, recently received a $1,000 scholarship from The South Eastern Association for Clinical Microbiology (SEACM).

SEACM’s mission is to promote scientific knowledge of microbiology in the Southeastern United States by providing educational opportunities and encouraging scientific investigation among its members, also seeking to improve and enhance recognition of the field of clinical microbiology.

Mayhill said she was honored to be chosen as the 2013-2014 SEACM recipient. She is also thankful for what the MLS program at TU has taught her and for her mentor, Karen Burgess, program director of Medical Laboratory Science.

“Brittney is a star, both on the field and in the lab,” Burgess said. “She is a positive energy force, and everyone she talks to hears about her passion for Medical Laboratory Science. She is very deserving of this scholarship, and I am so proud of her accomplishments. This is a huge reward for her, and I am proud that she will represent Thomas University at the spring SEACM meeting.”

Mayhill is a 2010 graduate of Gulf High School in New Port Richey, Fla., and the daughter of Debra and Larry Mayhill, also of New Port Richey.

“I chose to enroll at Thomas University because of the great atmosphere it has,” Mayhill said. “I had a scholarship to go to ASU in Alabama upon entering my junior year, but my old softball coach at Santa Fe told me about TU. Once I came to the University, I wasn't too sure what I wanted to do or what I wanted to be, but I knew the medical field is where I belonged.”

Mayhill continued, “The labs in the MLS program at Thomas University have made my career choice so much easier. They give me hands-on experience in my field of study.”
