‘Herculean’ effort wins spelling bee

Staff report

THOMASVILLE — By correctly spelling “Herculean” at the Thomas County district-wide competition, Jett Kiminas will be preparing to compete in the Big Bend Regional Spelling Bee in February.

The sixth grader at Scholars Academy earned the spot when he edged 14 other local students from Brookwood School, Cross Creek Elementary School, Jerger Elementary School, MacIntyre Park Middle School School, Thomas County Middle School, Thomasville Christian School, Scholars Academy and Scott Elementary School.

Each school held spelling bees determining  a winner and runner-up.  Both competed in the District Spelling Bee that was held in the auditorium of the Thomas County Board of Education on Dec. 5.

Melanie Chavaux, associate superintendent with the Thomas County School System, served as this year’s district spelling bee coordinator.

“I enjoy working with the school coordinators and always look forward to the day of competition,” Chavaux said.  “Coordinating the district-wide spelling bee is a team effort. I would like to thank this year’s judges, Mrs. Cheryl Harrison, director of the Lower School at Brookwood, Mrs. Donita Hinckley, system instructional technology coordinator/media specialist with Thomasville City Schools, and Mrs. Erin Rehberg, media specialist at Thomas County Middle School. I would also like to thank the pronouncer, Dr. Jim Rehberg, director of Honors, Gifted and Accelerated Instruction with Thomas County Schools, and Janet Campbell, media specialist at Cross Creek Elementary School, who served as our recorder.”
