TU establishes honor society for vets

THOMASVILLE — Thomas University has a new way to recognize veterans as a chapter member of the SALUTE honor society for military veterans.

“SALUTE offers an additional way for TU to celebrate our military veterans for their exemplary services to the nation for their academic achievements while pursuing a postsecondary degree,” said Faye Johnson, director of Student Support Services.

TU became a chapter member of the national SALUTE honor society through the efforts of the TU’s Trio Support Services program.

The SALUTE name stands for Service, Academics, Leadership, Unity, Tribute and Excellence. The purpose of the honor society is to acknowledge, congratulate, and pay homage and tribute to veterans who showed courage, strength, leadership, excellence and perseverance in their military endeavors.

SALUTE is the first national honor society established for student veterans and military veterans in a two-year or four-year institution of higher education. Establishment of this veteran honor society is funded by the ACE/Wal-Mart Success for Veterans Grant awarded to Colorado State in 2009.

Thomas University students who are inducted into membership of SALUTE  srepresent American military and veterans in higher education. Members may include retirees, disabled veterans, active duty military, National Guard and reservist returning to higher education, starting second careers, or helping fund their college careers with military service. SALUTE also includes a four-tier designed to encourage student veterans to strive to improve their GPAs and advance to a higher tier levels. These tiers are Alpha (3.7.5-4.00), Bravo (3.50-3.74) Charlie (3.25-3.49) or Delta (3.00-3.24) in the honor society during their academic careers.  Graduate students will be classified as SALUTE Gold members and must have 12 semester hours of graduate work and must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. SALUTE members will also be distinguished at TU’S annual Commencement ceremony by wearing SALUTE regalia.

For membership, applicants must submit a DD-214 Member 4 copy that displays the character of service (honorable discharge). Applicants currently serving on active duty or in the Guard or Reserves will need a copy of orders for their current duty assignment. Each student selected for recognition through membership will receive a military style challenge coin and a membership certificate.

The Trio SSS advisor for SALUTE is Jennifer Lindquist and the student veteran advisor is Staff Sgt. (Ret.) Mike Morabito.
