Flu vaccine 'helpful' against latest strains

THOMASVILLE — The latest strains of influenza are nothing to sneeze at. Influenza-like illnesses are affecting the area this winter, too.

“Influenza-like illnesses make a person feel as if they have the flu,” Lissa P. Murphy, M.D., of Archbold Urgent Care, said. “The flu is caused by a closely related group of viruses that is constantly changing and adapting.”

To prevent the flu, Murphy encourages the flu shots.

“The flu vaccine is very helpful at preventing the flu, but not completely effective because it needs to target not just one, but a group of viruses,” Murphy said. “Those viruses can change after the vaccine is produced.”

According to Murphy, the flu vaccine has been “very helpful” in preventing the flu this year.

“It is also helpful to avoid being around someone with the flu or similar viral illnesses,” Murphy said. “Those who are sick should stay home, cover their cough and wash their hands frequently. Those who are well should avoid crowds, avoid surfaces that are touched by others and clean those surfaces such as work phones, etc. Also wash their hands frequently.”
