Commission, community honor Beverly

THOMASVILLE — Many dramatic moments have take place in the third-floor courtroom at the Thomas County Courthouse — from unexpected acquittals at Superior Court trials to pronouncements of the death penalty.

On Tuesday morning, the room took on a new meaning.

For the first time, Thomas County commissioners met in the room as renovation/restoration of the historic 154-year-old continued around the event.

The meeting was conducted in the building in honor of Thomas County Commissioner Mary Jo Beverly’s last meeting.

Beverly did not seek re-election after a dozen years on the board.

Attending the historic meeting were Beverly’s family members, including her son, Thomasville Mayor Max Beverly.

Also attending were other Thomasville City Council members, county and city government employees, citizens, former county commissioners, a county commissioner-elect, a tax commissioner-elect, the Thomas County sheriff, deputies and a Thomasville Landmarks representative, among others.

“This is certainly a day we will remember,” said commission Chairman Elaine Mays, addressing the crowd in the large unfinished room that will serve as the commission chambers.

County offices will move into the building in early 2013.

“You have been such a wonderful commissioner,” Mays told Beverly. “I’ve enjoyed every minute we’ve had as commissioners.”

Mays unveiled a painting of the building by Brandon Godwin, a Boston resident.

“It’s in your honor,” the chairman said to Beverly.
