Annex bids sought

THOMASVILLE — Bids are being sought on a downtown building declared surplus by Thomas County commissioners earlier this year.

Bids are being sought on the former tax commission office at the intersection of Broad and Jackson streets.

The 9,300-square-foot building — at 101 S. Broad St. — was constructed in 1928, and previously housed Commercial Bank. County government bought the structure in 1980.

The building was vacated in July, when the tax commission moved into the restored and renovated Thomas County Courthouse.

The deadline for submitting bids is noon, Wednesday, Jan. 22. The bid award date is Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m.

The commission is required by law to accept the highest bid, said county Commissioner Wiley Grady, chairman of the commission public properties committee.

“If we refuse the highest bid, we have to refuse all bids,” the commissioner explained.

If bids are refused, the bidding process will be repeated.

Information and bid submittal forms are available by calling Twink Monahan at (229) 225-4100 or by e-mailing or at the commission website at

The building is formed concrete and poured-in-place concrete, including the roof frame.

A lobby elevator goes to the basement and to the second floor. A working electrical dumb waiter spans the three floors.

Counters on the main floor are marble.

The bank president's office was on the second floor, with glass doors that looked out onto the first floor below. Adjacent to the office is a conference room with a fireplace and handsome wood floors and walls. Ceiling-to-floor windows in the corner room look onto downtown streets and sidewalks.

Bronze window frames on the first floor have been painted. Some air ducts are bronze.

Several large vaults are located throughout the structure.

A 1960s remodeling project bypassed downstairs restrooms that have marble compartments and ornate wood compartment doors.

The basement contains a number of offices, a large breakroom and a small, fully equipped kitchen.
