Georgia Southwestern University student Andre Ivey of Thomasville won the Dolores Capitan Writing Award in the Academic Division.

Made possible through the support of GSW President Emeritus William Capitan, Ph.D., and the late Dolores Capitan, the Dolores Capitan Writing Award winners were named at the publication reception for "Sirocco" on Wednesday in the Marshall Student Center Faculty Dining Room. Sirocco, Georgia Southwestern State University's Arts Magazine, is published in April of each year by students.

The 2014 winners of the Dolores Capitan Writing Award were:

First Place: Kassandra Tuten with "Youth Politics and Dispelling the Image of The Terrible Turk with Selma Ekrem's Autobiography, Unveiled"

Second Place: Andre Ivey with "The Politics of African-American Children's Literature in Early 20th Century America"

Third Place: Diane Tebbel with "Seymour Sarason's Findings in his Book, 'Centers for Ending': Lack of Intimacy in Care Facilities for the Aged"

Sirocco features work from students, faculty, staff and alumni and is chosen by a student editorial staff. This year's magazine covered literary, visual and theater arts.

The magazine's literary editors are Alison McCarter from Buena Vista and Ellen Kay from Atlanta. Ashley Bratcher from Cordele is the art editor.

Each year, the magazine is dedicated to someone who has supported the arts or the magazine in some significant way. Genie Bryan, Ph.D., department chair and associate professor of English and Modern Language is this year's honoree. Bryan served as the faculty advisor from 2011 to 2013 and participates in the Sumter Players and the Southwest Civic Chorus.

The Sirocco is made possible by funding from the GSW Student Government Association, individual/local business donations and grant money from the Americus-Sumter Co. Arts Council.
