City announces fishing rodeo dates

Staff report

THOMASVILLE — The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Management Section, in conjunction with the City of Thomasville, CNS, Thomasville YMCA, Kiwanis Club, Blue Bell Creameries and Wal-Mart, will sponsor 2014 Fishing Rodeos for youth and senior adults.

Both events are free to the public and will be held at Cassidy Road Pond.

The youth rodeo will be for youngsters 15 and under. Youths will compete in one of four age categories: 6 years and under, 7- to 9-year-olds, 10- to 12-year-olds, and 13- to 15-year-olds.

The event will take place Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Each child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The senior fishing rodeo will be held Wednesday, May 22, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Kiwanis members will be on-site to assist novice anglers. Hot dogs, chips and sodas will be provided for participants.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three fisherman in each age group and the first 200 participants will receive a T-shirt. Those interested may register the morning of the event.

For more than 20 years, the annual event has served as a way to introduce youths to outdoor recreation and to teach them respect for the environment.

“We’d like everyone to join us for some good, old-fashioned fun during this great Thomasville tradition,” said Kha McDonald, City of Thomasville senior assistant city manager — human resources and community relations.

To reach Cassidy Road Pond: From downtown Thomasville, head west on Madison Street to Carroll Hill, turn right onto Cassidy Road. The pond is one mile on the right.
