Spread cheer, not flu during holidays

ALBANY — During Dec. 8-14, Southwest Public Health District is observing National Influenza Vaccination Week by encouraging residents to get flu vaccine to ensure they spread cheer instead of germs during the upcoming holiday season.

“Take the time to visit your healthcare provider or county health department to get your flu vaccine,” said Southwest Health District Health Immunization Coordinator Rebecca Snow.

The National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend everyone six months and older get vaccinated.

“Remember, it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to become fully effective. During the holidays, there are so many activities and opportunities to enjoy. Nobody wants to miss out from sickness; much less do they want to spread the flu,” Snow said.

“It’s easy to get caught up in our busy holiday schedules and forget the simplest step in protecting ourselves and our loved ones from vaccine-preventable diseases like the flu,” she said.

Influenza can be a serious disease that results in hospitalization or death. It crosses all races, ages, genders and ethnicities. Those especially at risk of complications from flu include adults 65 and older; children younger than five, pregnant women, and people with long-term medical conditions.
