Citizen recalls distressed man

THOMASVILLE — A local man eating at a Thomasville fast-food restaurant 10 days ago recalled a person in distress.

The man was not choking or having a heart attack, Roger Walker told Thomas County commissioners Tuesday.

The man left the restaurant.

Walker said he read in the Times-Enterprise the next day about the man being charged with going to Urgent Care and making bomb threats the same day.

Walker said there should be some sort of protocol when a person with mental health problems is in distress.

The man charged in the incident has been walking Thomasville streets for years, Walker told the board.

“Would we walk away from someone having a heart attack? Would we walk away form someone having a stroke? Why do we walk away from someone with mental illness?” Walker asked.

Walker has approached county commissioners several times about the closing of Southwestern State Hospital in Thomasville.
