Brookwood School has Region STAR student, teacher

THOMASVILLE — Brookwood School’s STAR Student Allison Stauffer has been named the STAR Student for Region 9 in Southwest Georgia, which includes 26 schools in 15 counties, incorporating Thomas County and extending west to the Alabama line, and from the Florida line north to Cordele, Americus, Dawson and Albany.

Stauffer and her STAR Teacher Carol Sheftall, her Advanced Placement biology teacher, will attend the STAR Banquet in Atlanta on April 22, coordinated by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators Foundation. Winners from the state’s 12 regions are interviewed to compete for scholarships and awards, and the runner-up and State PAGE STAR Student and STAR Teacher are announced.

Stauffer and Sheftall are sponsored locally by the Thomasville Kiwanis Club.

“All of us at Brookwood School are proud of Allison and her wonderful accomplishment as the Region STAR Student,” said Interim Headmaster Tom Johnson. “Having been a Brookwood student for 12 years, Allison has excelled as a scholar throughout her education with our faculty and has been her class’s Scholastic Leader for the past three years.”

In congratulating Carol Sheftall for being named the Region STAR Teacher, Johnson said, “I cannot think of any higher compliment than to be selected by one of your students for such an award. This is the satisfaction an outstanding teacher receives, and that is why we teach.”

To obtain the STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score on one test date on the three-part SAT taken through the November test date of their senior year and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average.

This is the fourth year in succession that the region’s STAR Student and Teacher have been from Brookwood: 2013—Olivia Howell and Keith Massey, 2012—Sarah Chason and David Grooms, 2011—Katherine Wolff and Ann Larson.

“We are fortunate to have had such outstanding students over the past few years,” said Upper School Director David Grooms.

“Having the Region 9 STAR Student for four consecutive years speaks to the overall quality of the program at Brookwood School. Certainly, all of these students have worked very diligently over their entire academic career to prepare themselves to earn such outstanding honors, but it also indicates the consistent excellence of the school academic program. The fact that the four students have chosen four different AP subject teachers is a reflection of the overall consistency and quality of both the students and faculty.”

Previously, in 2002, Brookwood’s Matthew Nicholson and Ann Larson were the STAR Student and Teacher of Region 9.

The daughter of  Lori and Jay Stauffer of Thomasville, Allison Stauffer will graduate with the Brookwood Class of 2014 on May 17.
