Georgia National Guard recognizes Rotary Club

THOMASVILLE — Staff report

SFC Kevin Hoffman of Thomasville’s 1230th Transportation Company, Georgia National Guard, presented the Thomasville Rotary Club with a certificate of appreciation for the support the club has given the troops when they deployed to Afghanistan, during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons and for their plans for helping the soldiers become employed when they return this summer.

The Rotary Supporting the Troops Committee met March 20 to develop a strategy for working with the community in assisting returning soldiers to find employment. The following was approved:

Develop an Employment List to include columns showing where the soldier would like to work, whether a job would be accepted anywhere offered, the three jobs for which the soldier is most qualified (mechanic, medical technician, truck driver, etc) and whether the soldier is interested in further educational opportunities.

The 1230th TC will designate a date during the out-processing when the majority of soldiers could participate in a Job Fair. Local businesses including Flowers Foods, Archbold Medical Center, Rotarians and  city and county officials  will be invited to participate with the help of Southwest Georgia Technical College to facilitate.

Rotarians and eEmployers in Thomasville will be asked to identify job openings available in the June time frame.

The resumes of the soldiers will be provided on a disk and these resumes will be forwarded to human resource staffs of local businesses and the Thomasville-Thomas County Chamber of Commerce.

For soldiers wishing to work at locations other than Thomasville, resumes will be forwarded to the nearest Rotary Club asking for assistance in placement.

Thomas University has offered to review the resumes and make suggestions for improvement.

Committee members present were Bryant Beadles, Carol Jones, Ed Elam, George Keeling, Nate Tyler, Nathanial Abrams, Homer Pankey, Ron Salter, Roy Campbell, Susan O’Neal and Joe Brown. Jeff Zoller also participated.
