Local 'Remarkable Women' honored

THOMASVILLE — A full house watched as 11 local ladies were honored Saturday by the Jack Hadley Black History Museum as “Remarkable Women.”

The celebratory banquet took place at the Douglass School cafeteria in the historic Dewey City section of Thomasville.

The event was the third annual “Remarkable Women’s Banquet.” Greeters/receptionists  included Christine J. Hadley, Mary Alice Bush, Catherine Gatlin and other Museum board members.

The 2014 honorees are Pastor Dorothy Brown, Dorothy Anders Butler, Imogene Conyers, Elizabeth Brooks Elzy, Geraldine Simmons Faulk, Joyce Gurley Holt, Dr. Hazel T. Jones, Joyce Williams Lawrence, Kha Thomas McDonald, Ossie M. Robinson and Pastor Gloria Walden. All are residents of Thomas or Grady counties.

Jewel McCaskill-McKibbens served as mistress of ceremonies. A welcome was given by Dorothy Jones. The Occasion was given by Dorothy Borden, chairperson for the 2014 Remarkable Women’s Banquet.

Dr. Virgil L. Murray Sr. gave the invocation and grace. Eugene Witherspoon provided soft music during intervals and the dining portion of the evening.

Dr. Linda McLean, Borden, Jones, and McCaskill-McKibbens took turns reading bios of the honorees.

Evangelist Lillie H. Witherspoon, vice president of the Jack Hadley Black History Museum, conferred plaques to the Remarkable Women.

Bobbie Marcus sang a spirited rendition of “Without You, I Can Do Nothing” a capella.

Remarks were given by Borden. Acknowledgements and thanks were given by Hadley, Museum president and curator. The benediction was given by Evangelist Witherspoon.
