West to speak at UDC tribute

THOMASVILLE — This year will mark the 140th Anniversary that the John B. Gordon 383 United Daughters of the Confederacy pays homage and tribute to the young brave soldiers who fought for a cause they believed worth dying for and a purpose they believed to be right.

Almost 150 years have passed since the end of the War Between the States. The local UDC chapter members invite the public to join them at 10 a.m., on Saturday, April 5 at the First United Methodist Church Chapel on Broad Street.

The program will include honoring  veterans of all wars. Several of the men being honored are local veterans. Vera Hagan is Recorder of Crosses for the UDC chapter. Sheila Tucker is chapter [resident.

Guest speaker will be he Rev. Donald J. West.

He was born at Augusta as a tenth generation  Georgian, his family having come to the Parish of St. Paul before the American Revolution. He was educated at the Academy of Richmond County  and received a degree in American History and English at La Grange College.

He attended the University of Edinburgh, Scotland,  for theological studies and   graduated from the Yale Divinity School.  He   later received a master’s degree in American Social, Religious and  Intellectual History from the University of Georgia at Athens.

He has served for the past 24 years as the minister of the Boston, Ga., Presbyterian Church and has served in various capacities on the synod and presbytery level.  

At present he is National Moderator of the Association of Presbyterian tentmakers which follows St. Paul's model as a tentmaker to promote bi vocational ministry in the church.

He is the owner-operator of West Real Estate Associates in Thomasville and has three daughters and two grandsons.
