Commissioners OK bonuses

THOMASVILLE — Seven Thomas County commissioners voted Tuesday to give county government performance incentive pay that will cost taxpayers more than $150,000.

Commissioner Mark NeSmith cast the sole nay vote.

Commissioner Phillip Brown, chairman of the commission personnel committee, recommended the bonuses and made a motion for the added pay. Commissioner Hershel Ansley provided the second to the motion.

Said Commissioner Merrill Baker, “I’m going to vote for this, because I think the employees deserve something.”

However, Baker said he had hoped employees would receive hourly pay increases.

“I think that will go further than the bonus,” he said.

Incentive pay, which will be awarded this year, totals $152,075.

Active, part-time employees will receive $50.

For full-time employees:

• Less than one year — $50

• One to three years — $250

• More than three years — $500
