Deed letters a scam

THOMASVILLE — Letters being mailed to local citizens claiming to have deed information are a scam.

The Thomas County Sheriff’s Office has been contacted by several citizens about the bogus letters.

“A company identifying themselves as ‘Local Records Office’ is sending out letters to property owners telling them their office has the only legal document that shows who the owner is,” said Capt. Steven Jones, sheriff’s office public information officer.

The letters, which resemble official tax notices, contain information about one’s property.

“It is not a bill or anything from the tax office,” Jones said.

Anyone who wants a copy of a deed that shows they own specific property can obtain an official copy from the office of the Thomas County clerk of court for $1 per page. Most deeds are two or three pages.

Jones said the fraudulent letters ask for payment ranging from $80 up to $500.
