Robinson essay contest deadline Feb. 28

— The 13th annual Jackie Robinson Essay Contest for all area sixth graders starts today, the baseball legend’s birthday.

Robinson, born in Grady County in 1919, broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. The essay contest is designed to commemorate his legacy as a civil rights pioneer.

The first-place winner will receive $100. Second- and third-place prizes are Robinson memorabilia and a Robinson legacy T-shirt, respectively.

Typed essays entitled “How has the life of Jackie Robinson made a difference in your life” must contain 300 words or fewer. Entrants must include their name, address, phone number, school and a parent/guardian’s name.

Mail essays by Feb. 28 to The Jackie Robinson Cairo Memorial Institute Inc., P.O. Box 541, Cairo, Ga. 39828.
