Oconee County senior with local roots selected for Senate Youth Program

THOMASVILLE — An Oconee High School senior with Thomasville roots was selected for the Senate Youth Program.

Jana Kelnhofer, 18, is the daughter of Diane Carman, a 1976 Brookwood graduate, and the granddaughter of Merle Carman and the late James L. Carman, Jr. of Thomasville.

Kelnhofer was one of the two Georgia students selected as a delegate to attend the Senate Youth Program, which is considered on the highest honors in the nation for high school students.

She was one of nearly 100 students in Georgia who applied for this honor. Only twos students from each state are chosen each year to participate.

The Senate Youth Program is an educational experience that allows participants to mingle with everyone from Senators to cabinet members to officials from the Departments of State and Defense. Senate Youth delegates also get to meet a Supreme Court Justice.

All expenses for the trip are paid in full by The Hearst Foundation, and each delegate receives a $5,000 scholarship.

“I feel extremely lucky. A trip like this would cost thousands of dollars, and the Hearst Foundation fully pays for everything. And, they add a college scholarship on top of that — which is very generous,” said Kelnhofer.

The high school senior is currently taking a full load of Advanced Placement Classes and is involved in numerous school clubs. She is a Student Council member, Beta Club officer, National Honor Society member and co-president of the OCHS Youth Democrats. Kelnhofer is on her high school’s varsity volleyball team and is an intern at UGA, where she is working on a study of electoral trends in ante-bellum America.

She has applied to colleges including Harvard, Georgetown, Columbia and New York University, where she would like to dual major in political science and statistics.
