Perdue decries happenings in Washington

THOMASVILLE —  Republican U.S. Senate candidate David Perdue simply cut to the chase during his address to the Rotary Club on Thursday.

“What’s going on in Washington is embarrassing,” he said while discussing the current budget stalemate and partial federal government shutdown. “If we don’t get something done, we will be in a serious crisis. If it were not for these troubles, I would not be running.

“I prayed about it and never dreamed I’d be doing this.”

Perdue, one of seven announced GOP candidates to replace retiring Saxby Chambliss, thinks his business experience would be helpful in the Senate. Born in Macon and raised in Warner Robins, he helped grow some of America’s most recognizable companies — including Sara Lee, Haggar and Reebok. He led the expansion of Dollar General stores and helped create thousands of quality jobs.

The candidate addressed national debt, saying one national security expert believes it is the country’s leading threat. He likened it to every future household of children in the country inheriting a $1 million credit card bill.

“We need to consider the fact that the future children are not going to be as well off as we are now,” he said. “Education will be lower and the debt is going to be handed down. Our kids deserve better than that.”
